In the last number of months, we have been working remotely with many of our clients. Local and regional lock-downs have meant that many scheduled sessions couldn’t go ahead because of travel restrictions etc, so we have found that many artist are deciding to continue with plans for recording and releasing their music, regardless. We have been working closely with a number of artists that have recorded, singles, EP’s or even full albums from home. Our role has been multifaceted; from dialing in on zoom as the recording is taking place to offer advice on setup, acoustics, cabling etc, to mixing and mastering the resultant recorded files.

One of the biggest take-away’s that we have found from this past year is that musicians are very fortunate to have access to some very good equipment, ordered online and delivered straight to their door, on a relatively modest budget. We recently worked with a singer songwriter that had been gifted a new MacBook Pro as a Christmas present but had no other equipment available to her, with very little experience recording. She invested the tried and tested Sure SM57 as well as a new Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 alongside some cables. With just this gear (and some strategically placed cushions, duvet’s and a pop shield made from an old pair of tights) she was able to record a 12 track album of all of her own original work. Now, would the finished product sound better if it was recorded in a professional studio? Yes. Don’t get me wrong here, it’s not a sufficient replacement, especially if you don’t have any experience with recording. In addition, the time it took to record the finished product was substantially longer than had the recording taken place in a studio with an experienced engineer however given the circumstances, it was the best option available. We are currently working on the mixing end of the project and look forward to mastering the album later on too.

If you are a musician or are in a band and you want to record, but cant get into a studio, dont worry, there’s always a way! Contact us today if you would like us to help with your home produced project.
